Dry Needling in Las Cruces
Dry needling is a modern approach that uses acupuncture needles, but they are used differently to achieve different results. While acupuncture addresses the flow of energy or “chi” throughout the body, dry needling is used to break up specific trigger points or muscle spasms.
At Smith Wellness, dry needling is one of many tools we have in our toolbelt to help patients with soft tissue issues. It offers excellent results for many patients, particularly when combined with chiropractic adjustments. Dr. Smith is certified in full body dry needling, which is an important distinction. Many practitioners who offer dry needling are not certified to address the entire body.

How It Works
Based on a thorough exam, Dr. Smith will determine where your muscles are tight or in spasm. Then he’ll place a very fine acupuncture needle in the skin over those areas. The needles stimulate the muscles to release, easing the spasm. The process is not painful—most people don’t experience any discomfort as the needles are placed, but there may be some discomfort when the muscles release, similar to what you’d experience in a deep tissue massage.
We can also electrify the needles using our e-stim machine, which improves the effectiveness of breaking up tension and spasm.
The Results
Our patients have experienced tremendous relief with this therapy for muscle problems and headaches. Generally, there is some immediate improvement, with complete healing occurring over time. We get the best results when we schedule visits close together at first, typically two times a week for the first couple of weeks. We encourage patients to commit to six or 12 sessions, depending on the severity of their condition.
We recently helped an 80-year-old patient who had very tight ropelike muscles and wanted to feel better before taking a trip she had scheduled. Dry needling got her cleared up in three visits.
