Ultrasound is a non-invasive, drug-free therapy that is useful in calming inflammation and swelling in joints or elsewhere in the body. How It Works
While it shares the same name, this type of ultrasound is not the same as the type that’s used diagnostically to screen inside the body. This type creates small sound waves that, in effect, vibrate and massage soft tissues and muscle.
A handheld device is placed in direct contact with your skin, over the affected area. High frequency sound waves penetrate below the skin into the soft tissues and joints, creating a pleasant warm feeling beneath your skin. The vibration caused by the sound waves increases blood flow to the area. This increased blood flow brings with it more oxygen and healing nutrients to facilitate healing in the area.
The Benefits
Ultrasound can be quite effective in relaxing muscle spasms and tightness. These sound waves do an excellent job of facilitating the body’s healing process, in addition to decreasing scar tissue formation. Certain ultrasounds also create a heating effect to help relax the muscles or tightness in the body.
